Individual Psychotherapy

Thinking about visiting a psychologist is a tough decision. We do not know what we are supposed to say, how to choose the right specialist and the most appropriate approach, if the specialist will understand our problems, if we will ultimately receive the help we need. These are common and normal thoughts towards an unfamiliar situation and they can, often, prevent us from making the first step. The purpose of this page is to inform you about psychotherapy, what is it, when is it necessary and what are the benefits, so that you can decide whether it is the right intervention for you.

Psychotherapy is a form of treatment through talk. This means that it does not involve medication but weekly sessions of 45-60 minutes in a stable day and time, mutually agreed between the therapist and the client. During these sessions, the therapist and the client work together to solve the problems that have led the latter to the psychologist’s office. There are many psychotherapy models and approaches. In my office, the main psychotherapy model used is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on the present problems that a person faces. Its main concept is that our difficulties stem mostly from the way we think upon a situation. Negative thoughts give rise to negative feelings and emotions and lead us to dysfunctional behaviors. This pattern of thinking and the way it interconnects with our emotions and actions traps us into a vicious cycle. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy uses specific methods and techniques that help clients

  • understand how their thoughts influence their mood and behavior
  • question their way of thinking
  • develop an alternative, more realistic, way of thinking
  • improve their mood
  • solve their problems
  • set realistic goals and accomplish the,
  • be calm and happy

The most important feature of CBT is that it is a collaborative method, it is based on an honest relationship of mutual trust and respect and its effectiveness is scientifically supported by numerous studies.
